• Otto Framing is a bespoke framing studio, based in Camberwell, South East London. We specialise in contemporary and creative frame design, working with private and commercial clients, galleries, interior designers, and artists.

We’ll work with you to understand your ideas and preferences, providing a personalised service and expert guidance to ensure we capture your vision perfectly. We respect the integrity of each piece we frame, treating every artwork with the utmost care, consideration, and attention to detail.

    Our practice

  • Handling

We recommend holding your frames with two hands, so that no single side or joint of the frame is put under excess pressure. It is good general practice to keep frames in their intended orientation, as some mounting styles and fixtures are susceptible to becoming weakened if the frame is held or stored sideways or upside down.

    Hanging

Our frames are fitted with a few different types of hanging fixtures, which we will fit based on consideration of the size, depth and weight of your frame. We will explain the best hanging method for your frame at the time of your collection, and we’re happy to provide additional advice or to recommend a specialist installer if you require.

    Cleaning

Use a small amount of glass cleaner on a microfibre or lint-free cloth, and lightly wipe the glass to remove dust or marks from the surface – don’t spray directly onto the glass. A clean, dry cloth is most suitable for the frame itself, but we’re happy to advise on specific care for your frame’s finish.

    Storing

If your frame needs to go into storage for a period of time, ensure that it is wrapped well with a protective material and placed in an upright position. We would advise against drastic temperature and humidity changes, as this can compromise the artwork, mounting fixtures and the frame joints and finish.

    Placement

Temperature and humidity fluctuations can affect your artwork over time, so we would generally advise hanging your frames in stable environments whenever you can. Places in the home that fluctuate the most with temperature and humidity are bathrooms, kitchens, near to windows and external doors, and above radiators.

  • Supply chain

We strive to ensure that our supply chain reflects our commitment to sustainability and ethical consideration of the planet and its resources. Our frame timber and mountboards are FSC certified, meaning they are made with materials that support responsible forestry. We participate in a waste programme with our glass supplier to ensure that all waste glass is recycled appropriately.

    Finishing

To reduce our local environmental impact, we use eco-friendly water-based wood adhesives and natural wood finishes, including hardwax oils and walnut husk stains. We use emulsion paint from suppliers whose products are classified as Trace VOCs or Minimal VOCs.

    Packaging

Ensuring the protection of our finished frames is a key part of our service. Currently we use an LDPE (low density polyethylene) packaging which is accepted by most domestic recycling services. We are currently exploring options for biodegradable packaging.

    Waste minimisation

The majority of our off cut timber material is reused or repurposed in the studio. Smaller pieces will be used as spline material in our spline joinery, and larger off-cut sections of frame mouldings are stored and reused for frames or other woodwork commissions. We offer a pricing discount for frames made from existing off-cut materials, subject to availability and suitability.
